Instagram as a news source

I’m curious to hear what the class thinks about the explosion of Instagram sources during the Empire State shooting. Read this article… Is an Instagram photo worth the price?

Instagram Engineering: Keeping Instagram up with over a million new users in twelve hours

instagram-engineering:

On Tuesday we launched Instagram for Android, and it’s had a fantastic response so far. The last few weeks (on the infrastructure side) have been all about capacity planning and preparation to get everything in place, but on launch day itself the challenge is to find problems quickly, get to the…

Did you Android users join? I know we’ve talked a lot about Instagram in class.

My friend Anthony Quitano who is the social media manager at NBC takes FABULOUS photos on his iPhone and shares them through Instagram. I’m a big fan of his morning ferry photos of the New York City skyline. I actually look forward to it each morning. I’m that big of a fan. Well, he’s sharing how he gets these photos done. It’s awesome.
By the way… I have yet to meet Anthony in person. I can’t wait for SXSW. (Here’s his Tumblr.)

I’m kind of obsessed with Instagram. You can only use it with an iPhone… but not only can you turn an okay photo into something beautiful, there’s a really great number of growing communities based on hashtags inside Instagram. Chicago (where Craig posted this from) has a fantastic group of people who post photos using the #igerschicago tag. Our newsroom could consider building the #UonTV hashtag or even an #igerscolumbiamo or something more creative.

Like Instagram, PicYou allows you to apply a variety of filters to their images, add a Polaroid frame, and share them through your social networks. (via Instagram Alternative PicYou Launches iPhone App)

Could this be a new community to follow? I guess we can dig in and see.

Bringing Instagram to full photos in Facebook is kind of a big deal

I used to avoid posting many Instagram photos to Facebook. It showed up like a link and didn’t encourage much discussion. Now you can link a photo to FB and it goes to an “Instagram Photos” folder. I manually manage an IG folder in my Flickr… I love having it automatically show up in Facebook. Today I chose to post my photos through IG instead of directly to Facebook. I got the same if not more interaction posting it this way.

I think this is a big deal as more newsrooms integrate the use of Instagram basing the posts on hastags. I’m curious to see how IG continues to merge functionality inside FB.

Check out how NBC is using Tumblr and Instagram during the election year (along with the other old standards). I love the Instagram perspective - especially ones by NBC Senior Community Manager Anthony Quitano.
